Welcome to the APIA Fanatics website, the official homepage for supporters of the mighty APIA Leichhardt Tigers Football Club. The APIA Fanatics are a group of keen Tigers supporters who live around the Leichhardt area. We like to regularly attend Tigers games, where we display banners of our club's colours and vocally get behind the team for the full 90 minutes. If you'd like to join in the fun, click here to contact the APIA Fanatics.
The History of APIA
APIA is an Italian-Australian football (soccer) club based in Sydney, Australia (APIA stands for Associazione Poli-sportiva Italo Australiana, which in English means Italian-Australian Multicultural Sporting Association). The club was formed in 1954 by Italian migrants, was one of the founding clubs of the Australian National Soccer League and played in the NSL from 1979 to 1992 (winning the league in 1987). Originally formed under the name APIA Leichhardt, the club adopted the tiger logo in the early 1990s to further familiarise itsself with the local sporting community around Leichhardt. APIA currently plays in the New South Wales Premier League, which is semi-professional and the second highest level of football in Australia (only behind the fully professional A-League).
APIA has enjoyed good success since laeving the NSL and returning to the NSW Football Federaton. The club won the NSWPL in 2003 and lifted the Johnny Warren Cup in 2007, while continually producing some of Australia's finest NSL and A-League players. Some well known names who've worn the APIA colours include Joe Marston, Tim Cahill, Clint Bolton, Ante Covic, Manfred Schafer, Jimmy Rooney, Peter Wilson, Ray Richards, Ernie Campbell, Matthew Bianco, Marcus Stergiopoulos, Tony Franken, Graham Jennings, Darren Stewart, Brian O'Donnell, Lawrie McKinna and Paul McFadden.
The club plays its home games at Lambert Park, which is located in the suburb of Leichhardt (in Sydney's inner western suburbs), and is mainly supported by locals of the Leichhardt-Haberfield area. However, as of season 2009, there have been some large changes put in place for the representative squads. While the youth and women's representative teams are still based at Lambert Park, the NSWPL squad will be playing all home games at Leichhardt Oval. The club felt that the move to a bigger venue would widen the appeal of the team and provide the club and supporters with top quality facilities.
